What is this?

The Ontario Opportunities Fund allows Ontario residents to reduce the provincial debt by making monetary contributions. These contributions are considered a gift to the Crown.

You can participate in the Ontario Opportunities Fund by choosing to contribute all or a portion of your income tax refund, or by sending a cheque or money order, payable to the Minister of Finance.


Am I eligible?

If you make a contribution to the Ontario Opportunities Fund, you will receive a receipt and will be eligible to claim a non-refundable tax credit on your return for the tax year in which you contributed.


Where do I claim this?

Important: Before you begin, make sure you tell us that you lived in ONTARIO on December 31st of the 2015 tax year, in H&R Block’s tax software. To do this:

  1. Click the HOME tab.
  2. Click the ABOUT YOU icon, and click the Your residence link. You will find yourself here:

Once you have confirmed your residence location, enter your contribution to the Ontario Opportunities Fund by following these steps:

  1. Click the PREPARE tab.
  2. Click the OTHER icon. You will find yourself here:
  3. Under the OTHER DEDUCTIONS section, select the checkbox labelled Ontario opportunities fund.
  4. Click Continue.

When you arrive at the page for the Ontario opportunities fund, enter your information into the tax software.
