Claiming a dependant who lives with you

What’s in this article?

What is this?

The question Does this dependant live with you? helps determine if you are eligible for certain dependant deductions on your tax return, such as:

  • Eligible dependant
  • Caregiver amount
  • Family caregiver amount
  • Disability transfer
  • Tuition transfer

The age of your dependant may also be used to calculate other tax amounts, such as your GST/HST credit, your working income tax benefit, etc.

Am I eligible?

Typically, a dependant is someone who:

  • Is either under 18, a child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, niece, nephew, aunt, or uncle (of either yourself, you spouse, or your common-law partner), or someone who is mentally or physically infirm;
  • Is related to you by blood, marriage, or adoption;
  • Lived with you in a home that you maintained; and
  • Lived in Canada.

If you share custody of your dependant, only one parent can claim the eligible dependant tax deductions.
